Get to know me better!

Hello, I'm Dorson, a year 2 student studying Chemical Engineering๐Ÿงช at Singapore Polytechnic!

This blog is for the module all year 2s are taking, Chemical Product Design & Development.๐Ÿ“

Here are 2 personal goals✔️ that I have for this module:

1. I want to improve my laser cutting skills✂️. (but why?) Well, last semester, we were tasked to make this unicorn and we were provided a carboard that has been laser cut according to the specific dimensions. I was amazed at how easy it was to assemble the unicorn. Had I needed to manually cut using pen knife, I think my unicorn, no it wouldn't look like a unicorn anymore. Another reason is during our practical lesson in the previous semester, we had to make use of several type of joineries to present to the class. Despite learning the joineries, we still had to cut using pen knife, which was quite tedious. Oh wait... there's another reason, during my group's prototyping using cardboard, we have to use pen knife to cut it as well... Needless to say, many times I had to use pen knife and manually cut out the pieces from cardboard. I'm lucky that I was using cardboard, had it been a tougher material, it would have required much more effort! So I think being able to be competent in laser cutting would really benefit me, and who knows I may even be able to help my friends!

2. This time we are no longer updating our blog as a group. More task would be completed by myself. I would want to ensure that I'm able to complete all weekly blog updates on time and with consistent effort. Since I would not be able to ask my group for help anymore. Hope that I will be able to learn how to manage my time especially since I'm already a year 2 student. ⏱️

So the question is, HOW? What's going to make this work?

1. Firstly, I have to learn the basics of laser cutting! Being able to understand the fundamentals of it is important to build a strong foundation. Having the theoretical knowledge is okay, but not good enough. Hands-on practise during practical would give me a great opportunity to learn how the laser cutter works. How precise it can be and what are the restrictions, or flaws it has. I can compare my final product to my friend's and we can help each other improve. I believe by helping one another it is a win-win situation and we can learn progressively!

2. Instead of leaving everything to the last minute. I decided to look through the list of things we need to update. Split it into halves. Complete half of it by the end of the day, be it drafting on word document or updating the blog itself. The next half can be completed subsequently by the end of the week. This is to also ensure I do not overwork and over prioritise any module.

Now that I've planned out these steps to achieve this goal, how would I really know that its been done?

I know whether I've achieved this goal because, if I have, by the end of the semester, if given the opportunity, I would have additional products aside from the ones we made during class/ practical. This would expand my creativity and at the same time improve my skills by utilising laser cutting more often.

If I realise that I am not rushing to complete the blog before any timely checks, this means that I'm on task! If I were to be rushing, then it would mean that I have procrastinated a lot. Or perhaps have other commitments like tests and exams. There should definitely be some give and take in my opinion.

What happened from last semester?!?!

Well initially we had a group consisting of 4 members: Myself (of course), Haziq, Derrick and Hai Jie. However, due to different class arrangement, Hai Jie is no longer in our class. Hence our new group will consist of me, Haziq and Derrick.

⤐ be present - better late than never

⤐ doing something is better than nothing

⤐ all opinions should be heard and considered

⤐ respect one another and work together

That's all I have. Hope you got to know me a lil better!

Feel free to read my blog and ask me any questions! Cya! ๐Ÿ˜†
